Industry Mentoring Program

In 2015, the UNSW Women in Engineering Society Executive Committee went onto establishing a pilot Industry Mentoring Program for undergraduate engineering students at UNSW.

The three month program, to run from August to October, aims to:

  • Expose engineering students to the professional engineering environment

  • Allow students to gain experience in developing professional relationships

  • Encourage the understanding of diversity within the industry, and

  • Strengthen the relationship between the industry and university students

Upon opening the registration process in June, we received an enormous response from students and industry professionals interested in participating in the pilot program. The 26 students selected were paired with 22 industry members ranging from company CEOs to recent graduates working within the engineering industry, willing to share their experiences and knowledge working.

'Meet & Greet' Opening Ceremony

On the 30th of July, the UNSW Women in Engineering Society kicked off the very first year of the Industry Mentoring Program with the opening 'Meet and Greet' event sponsored by UNSW Chemical Engineering.

More than 40 people attended the event, including industry professionals from a range of companies including Google, ANSTO, James Hardie, Cochlear, Aurecon, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff to name a few, as well as undergraduate students, Faculty of Engineering members including Alex Bannigan, Dr May Lim and Professor Vicki Chen, Head of UNSW Chemical Engineering.

The Meet and Greet held at the UNSW Chemical Engineering seminar room started with a welcome address giving by Linda Tran, the President of UNSW WIE. Guest speaker, Dr. May Lim who is the Industrial Training Coordinator of UNSW Chemical Engineering, then spoke about the great potential of this program and the benefits that can be reaped. Following a review of the important program dates and guidelines, an icebreaker was introduced to create a relaxed environment and encourage conversation. Mentors and mentees were then given the opportunity to meet face-to-face for the first time and to chat to one another for the rest of the evening.

To finalise the mentoring program for 2015, a Concluding Ceremony sponsored by UNSW Chemical Engineering will be held on 15th October.

UNSW WIE would like to thank Alex Bannigan, Helena Scimone, Dr. May Lim, Dr. Mary O’Connell and Dr. Megan Lord for their assistance and advice during the planning process. Special thanks goes to UNSW Chemical Engineering for providing the catering and venue for the event.
